The Beginning of the Universe
The Big Bang
About 13.8 billion years ago the universe began with the big bang. Spacetime was initially infinitely hot and dense and the four fundamental forces were unified. At 10^-35 seconds (the Planck time) the inflationary epoch describes the universe expanding exponentially. As the universe cooled fundamental particles like quarks and gluons formed and eventually combined into larger particles like protons and neutrons. At one second matter dominates over antimatter. At three minutes fusion occurred and the first atomic hydrogen and helium formed. The universe looked like a soup of plasma until about 380,000 years when it cooled down enough to form neutral atoms and decouple from light, creating the cosmic microwave background.
